The
New Z29
![]()
You won’t find this
arresting-looking coupe in BMW’s lineup any time soon. But many of the Z29’s
construction secrets will heavily influence the German carmaker’s next
generation of models, as BMW strives for improved performance through weight
reduction.
A product of BMW’s heavily cloaked Technik department, the two-seat concept is
an engineering showcase for an array of carbon fiber and aluminum parts and
state-of-the-art assembly methods. At just 2552 pounds, the Z29 weighs 669
pounds less than the similarly sized Z4 M Coupe with which it shares its
3.2-liter, 343-hp inline six-cylinder engine and other driveline components. BMW
claims the 0-to-62-mph time at 4.4 seconds and top speed at 168 mph.
